For the Cake:

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Chocolate Ganache:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 ounces high-quality dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

For the Chocolate Buttercream:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 and 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Cake Batter:

  • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
  • Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
  • Beat the mixture on medium speed for about 2 minutes until well combined.
  • Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin, but that’s okay.

Bake the Cake:

  • Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare the Chocolate Ganache:

  • In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it just begins to simmer.
  • Pour the hot cream over the chopped chocolate and let it sit for a minute.
  • Stir the mixture until smooth, then add the butter and stir until fully incorporated.
  • Allow the ganache to cool to a spreadable consistency.

Make the Chocolate Buttercream:

  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  • Add the sifted confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  • Beat on medium-high speed until smooth and fluffy.

Assemble the Cake:

  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of chocolate ganache over the top.
  • Add a generous layer of chocolate buttercream on top of the ganache.
  • Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the process, spreading ganache and buttercream.
  • Use any remaining ganache and buttercream to frost the sides and top of the cake.

Decorate (optional):

You can decorate the cake with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or additional ganache.

Chill and Serve:

Allow the cake to chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving. Slice and enjoy!

May your Valentine’s Day be filled with shared laughter, lingering glances, and the irresistible allure of this delectable creation you crafted with love.
